Boost your wellbeing with free one-day and half-day workshops

People talking and laughing

Expert therapists will be running free half-day and one-day workshops over the coming weeks to help people struggling with a range of problems – everything from stress, to lack of sleep, to low self-esteem.

The trained psychological therapists, all members of Talking Mental Health Derbyshire, are holding introductory sessions open to anyone registered with a GP in Derby or Derbyshire who needs advice, tips or support with:

Anxiety and stress management

Date: Wednesday 22 October, 9.30am to 12.30pm
Venue: Unity Mill House, Derwent St, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 1WN

This workshop will introduce good, evidence-based treatments that can help you feel better. Whilst some anxiety, panic and fear are normal, and even helpful, they are exhausting when they start to take over your life, and can severely limit what you are able to do. Start to learn how to manage them.

Mindfulness (being present in the moment)

Date: Wednesday 22 October, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
Venue: Ilkeston Resource Centre, Ilkeston Community Hospital, Heanor Road, Ilkeston DE7 8LN

Learning the basic tools of mindfulness is a great way to stay ‘in the moment’ and be better in touch with your thoughts, feelings and the world around you. This can help with a whole range of problems such as anxiety and depression. People who learn these skills tell us they find them really helpful.

Improved sleep

Date: Thursday 23 October, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
Venue: Centre for Research & Development, Kingsway Site, Kingsway, Derby DE22 3LZ

Poor-quality sleep is a problem that affects one in three of us at some point in our lives. For some people there will be medical or environmental reasons for having trouble sleeping, but for many people, sleep problems seem to come out of nowhere. ‘Talking about improved sleep’ will look at the way we think about and approach our sleep, our beliefs and expectations about good sleep and will offer practical tips on how you can reduce anxiety and improve sleeping.

Positive communication (assertiveness)

Date: Tuesday 4 November 2014 (all day)
Venue: Centre for Research & Development, Kingsway Site, Kingsway, Derby DE22 3LZ

This workshop will be ideal for people who struggle to express themselves because of how they feel. It will encourage new ways to think about what we say and how we say it, and offer tips on how to be assertive when it is appropriate.

Date: Monday 17 November (half day) – exact times to be confirmed
Venue: to be confirmed

Different individuals have varying levels of self-esteem depending on how they value themselves. This workshop will help those struggling with self-esteem who wish to develop their own self-help plan to lift low moods and calm anxiety.

These workshops will give you practical tips and advice on how to maintain your mental well-being. Addressing issues at an early stage could prevent more severe problems in the future.

To book a place, call Talking Mental Health Derbyshire on 0300 123 0542 or email dhcft.talking@nhs.net. A brief telephone assessment will be required before coming to a workshop.
