Helen Chapman Clinical Coding Co-ordinator was the main speaker at the SbK “Driving Forward Mental Health Clinical Coding” at Manchester on July 2nd 2013.
The day was based around the Information Governance Toolkit Requirements for Clinical Coding and sharing best practice to build coding capabilities.
It was attended by delegates from all over the UK with an interest in mental health clinical coding. Training and development of MH coders, the importance of clinical involvement and validation processes were all covered throughout the day with presentations and interactive group discussions. Helen also did a presentation about the importance of MH coding support groups and how valuable they are in such a small area of coding outside acute hospitals as MH coders face different challenges to acute trust coders.
Helen herself founded the Mental Health Unification Group which meets quarterly at Kingsway House with coders coming from as far away as Sunderland, Wales and Hertfordshire. It is open to anyone with an interest in MH coding, there are frequently guest speakers and Dr Komocki has given several valuable talks around MH disorders.
