Award winning mental health and suicide prevention campaigner Jonny Benjamin has been announced as guest speaker for Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s annual members meeting (AMM) this September – and anyone with an interest in health and wellbeing is invited.
Jonny, who made headlines around the world for his ‘find Mike’ campaign – to search for the stranger who talked him out of taking his own life in 2008 – will attend the AMM which is being held on Thursday 22 September, from 2.30pm – 6.30pm at the Ilkeston Resource Centre, Ilkeston Community Hospital, Heanor Road, Ilkeston DE7 8LN. Light refreshments will be available.
The AMM gives members of the public an opportunity to review the Trust’s past work and future plans, and this year’s event will follow the theme of ‘prevention’ – a subject Jonny Benjamin holds close to his heart. The event coincides with the launch by the Trust of a new suicide prevention strategy, which will see the organisation redoubling its efforts to reduce incidents of self-harm and suicide, working with partner organisations across Derby and Derbyshire.
Prevention market place
Attendees are invited to come along to the AMM from 2.30pm to visit the Trust’s ‘market place’. Here there will be a selection of stalls where people can learn more about the range of Derbyshire Healthcare services that specialise in preventative care and what they have achieved over the past year. There will also be a chance to speak to the health professionals who care and support for many local people.
A review of the year
The formal meeting, which will commence at 4.30pm, will include a number of personal stories – both from Jonny Benjamin and from people who have used and/or are currently using Derbyshire Healthcare’s services – as well as a summary from directors and governors of the Trust’s performance throughout 2015/16, and what to expect in the current financial year.
Commenting on his attendance at the event, Jonny Benjamin said: “I’m delighted to be attending Derbyshire Healthcare’s annual members meeting. I know from both personal experience and my work as a mental health campaigner that suicide is preventable. However it is something that still remains a taboo in our society. I'm hoping the AMM will help to remove this taboo and get people talking about self-harm and suicide.
"Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45"
“Suicide takes 17 lives every single day in the UK and is now the biggest killer of men under 45. It's about time we stopped ignoring and finally started addressing how we can prevent it. It's really encouraging to see this happening in Derbyshire.”
As a Foundation Trust, local residents, service receivers and their carers can become members of the Trust and help shape its services and future developments through their local, elected governor. Anyone wishing to join the Trust as a member will be able to sign up at the meeting.
