National stamp of approval for Chesterfield’s hospital mental health team

Chesterfield residents can rest assured that the treatment and support on offer for mental health and/or drug and alcohol issues at Chesterfield Royal Hospital is among the best in the land, after the team that specialises in these issues received nationally recognised accreditation.

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s liaison psychiatry team, which provides comprehensive advice, support and a signposting service to patients over the age of 17 where potential emotional and/or substance abuse problems are identified, has been presented with the stamp of approval from the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ psychiatric liaison accreditation network (PLAN).

The accreditation was received in recognition of the continued commitment, dedication and innovation by the Liaison Team’s health professionals to deliver high-quality care.

National beacon of success

As a result of becoming part of the accreditation network, supported by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the service will help support and develop other liaison psychiatry teams throughout the UK by identifying and addressing areas for improvement. The Liaison Team will benefit too by being invited to learn and reflect from the achievements of other accredited services – helping to further develop the Chesterfield provision by bringing fresh ideas to improve quality, safety and efficiency within the service.

The psychiatric Liaison Team, which was launched at Chesterfield Royal Hospital in January 2015 following the success of a similar team commissioned for the Royal Derby Hospital in Derby, offers a high-quality intervention, assessment and discharge process that covers all aspects of mental health – including drug and alcohol use and self-harming. The team operates across the entire hospital setting including the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department and inpatient wards.

Commenting on the accreditation, Mark Powell, Chief Operating Officer for Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said: “I’m delighted that our Liaison Team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital has received official recognition for its efforts to lead the way nationally in making constant improvements to the patient experience.

"leading the way"

“In addition to the essential care and support the team delivers to patients and carers at the Royal, alongside the 24/7 support they provide to front-line clinicians, the accreditation network will enable the Liaison Team to increase their partnership working and, in turn, provide an even better service to the people of north Derbyshire.”

Chesterfield’s Liaison Team will join the network alongside colleagues at Derby’s Liaison Team – based at the Royal Derby Hospital – who were accredited in December 2016.
