Refugee Week 2013

This year refugee week runs between 17-23 June. As always this week is well celebrated throughout Derby with lots of exciting activities and events organised.

Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events and activities that celebrates the contribution of refugees to the UK and promotes better understanding of why people seek sanctuary. Anyone can take part by organising, attending or taking part in activities.

Derby Programme

Saturday 15th June – Sanctuary: Derby’s Festival of Culture (11am – 3pm, Derby Market Place)
Come and experience different cultures with live music, dance, children’s activities, exhibitions and stalls. Make a new friend and discover the world on your doorstep! Tuesday 18th June – Mental Health Stigma Awareness Raising Workshop (11am – 2pm, Bosnia Herzegovina Community Centre, 99 Curzon Street, Derby)
Participants will be equipped information and techniques of how to raise awareness of mental health stigma among refugee communities. Free hot food and refreshments will be served. Wednesday 19th June – “Working with New Communities” (11 am – 2.30pm, St James Centre, Malcolm Street, DE23 8LU)
A networking and awareness raising event for mainstream service providers and community members. An opportunity for people working or wanting to work with refugee and other new community groups, to learn more and network. Free event and lunch provided. Organised by Upbeat, NCISE and Red Cross. Thursday 20th June – ‘Sew and Cake’ afternoon (1pm – 3pm, St Chad’s Community Centre, 1 St Chads Road, DE23 6RS)
Come and meet the ladies who run the SEW-2-Work enterprise, and have a go at sewing something for yourself (or just eat cake!). Contact louise@upbeatcommunities.org

Thursday 20th June – Refugee Week Awards and World Food Night (6.30pm dinner – 9pm, St James Centre, Malcolm Street, DE23 8LU)
Your chance to dress up for our own special dinner and awards night! Come and celebrate all that’s been happening this year as city leaders present awards for voluntary service, enterprise, achievement and community leadership. World Food will be served by communities who have contributed to the Our Food Shared Food recipe book. Free event – booking recommended as limited places. Sunday 23rd June – ‘Our Food Shared Food’ Family Fun Day and World Picnic (12 – 4pm, Normanton Park, Warwick Avenue, Derby)
