It gives me great pleasure to inform you that our Council of Governors has approved the appointment of Professor Steve Trenchard to the position of Chief Executive of Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Steve is currently Executive Director of Nursing and Patient Experience at the West London Mental Health Trust and comes to the Trust with a wealth of experience within the NHS, the private sector and in academia. Steve is a clinician by background and is passionate and committed to delivering high quality care.
His appointment was approved today (Wednesday October 31), at an extraordinary meeting of Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s Council of Governors, which includes elected public and staff representatives.
A registered mental health nurse by background, Professor Trenchard brings to his new role more than 20 years of healthcare experience across the NHS, the independent sector and academia.
He said: “I'm joining a passionate and committed Board who have made it clear to me that they want our Trust to be one of the top five healthcare Trusts in the country.
“This is an exciting challenge and one I'm determined to progress over the coming years.
“I'm keen to hear more about our key challenges and strengths as we continue to deliver the excellent services I have only yet read about or witnessed from afar.”
He added: “I intend to be very visible and to meet as many colleagues as possible to hear ideas, their experience of working in the Trust and importantly how they can personally be involved in shaping and influencing the future of our services.
“I'm a firm believer in teamwork, partnership working and placing the experience of service users and carers at the centre of everything we do - this is what will continue to make us stand out as a high-performing Trust."
Professor Trenchard succeeds Mike Shewan, who had been Chief Executive for 12 years – guiding the organisation to Foundation Trust status in 2011 - before he took up a secondment opportunity in relation to Provider Development for NHS North of England.
Kathryn Blackshaw, who has been Acting Chief Executive for the past six months, will continue in the role until ProfessorTrenchard formally takes up his new post in January. Between now and then he will be making regular visits to the Trust.
Alan Baines, Trust Chairman, said: “We are delighted to have appointed a Chief Executive of Steve’s calibre and strong clinical background. I believe the Trust will have a very bright future under his leadership and with the continued hard-work of our skilled staff.
“I would also like to place on record our gratitude to Mike for his contribution to the development of mental health services across Derbyshire spanning over a decade, as well as to Kathryn for the way she has continued our success story over the past six months.
“This has created a strong platform on which we can take forward our ambitious plans to be at the national forefront of NHS quality and innovation.”
