We have teamed up with the award-winning children's newspaper, First News, to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week by producing a feature on mindfulness, explaining what it is and how it can help.

The feature, written by our Head of Nursing - Specialist Services, Richard Morrow, outlines how mindfulness creates space to think, enabling us to fix our attention on a particular thought or task. The piece also gives an example of how mindfulness can be helpful when preparing for exams, by allowing the mind to move away from negative thoughts to concentrate on positive visualisations and feelings of calm.

Mindfulness is the theme of this year's Mental Health Awareness Week, running from 11 to 17 May. A special website has been set up all about mindfulness: http://bemindful.co.uk

The report can be found in issue 464 of First News, on sale from 8-14 May 2015. You can download and read the report as a PDF, republished here with the kind permission of First News.

Our work with First News

This is the eighth feature we have produced in collaboration with First News.

The first feature coincided with 2014 Mental Health Awareness Week and was about anxiety.

The second feature in September last year was about finding your feet at a new school.

The third feature promoted World Mental Health Day in October.

The fourth feature discussed the challenges of coping with Christmas.

The fifth feature focused on the importance of talking openly about mental health for Time To Talk Day.

The sixth feature looked at eating disorders to coincide with Eating Disorders Awareness Week.

The seventh feature was about autism and was published during World Autism Awareness Week.
